All surface proteins possess an N-terminal leader peptide (N) and a C-terminal cell wall sorting signal. Many surface proteins possess several repeating domains. Particularly striking are the Cα and Rib proteins of S. agalactiae, which are composed of 9 or 12 nearly identical repeat domains, respectively (see the text).
