(A and B) After secretion by S. simulans bv. staphylolyticus (A), prolysostaphin is converted to the active mature species and targeted to those staphylococci that harbor the appropriate receptor on the bacterial surface (B). (C and D) Mature lysostaphin is a glycyl-glycine endopeptidase that cleaves the peptidoglycan crossbridge of staphylococci (C), thereby hydrolyzing the cell wall envelope and lysing the bacteria (D).
