Monocytes express melatonin receptors in the BM and the circulation. However, monocytes lose this expression after infiltrating the CNS and differentiating into macrophages. On the other hand, microglia, and brain-resident macrophages express melatonin receptors, while BM-derived macrophages lack this expression in demyelinated mice.
