Layer boundaries were assigned on 12 μm thick coronal sections, stained for DAPI and NeuN in M1, S1Bf and S2 (Supplementary Figure 2). Relative layer thickness data were used for total neuron number estimations in each layer (Table 2) and for assigning the backlabeled cells to layers.
