The fraction of INPs lost in the 60°C treatment is termed heat sensitive; the fraction tolerating 60°C but deactivated by 95°C is termed moderately heat tolerant; and the fraction still active after both treatments is called heat tolerant. Mean values are for five measurement points on three and two samples from the Amazon and Tocantins river plumes, respectively (s.d. = standard deviation).
