One litre of seawater contains a myriad of particles of organic matter, phytoplankton and protozoa cells, bacteria, viruses and dissolved chemical compounds. These different objects (drawn not to scale) can encounter one another, for example, due to fluid mixing, density mismatch, motility and diffusion.
