A. A schematic of example localist versus distributed neuronal codes. B. Localist versus distributed representations can be implemented in many ways. An example of localist code is the pattern code without redundancy (known as the “Grandmother cell”, (Bowers, 2009)). An example of distributed code is a code relying only on the relative response of each cell and not the magnitude of response of the population vector. C.
