Fluid flow in cell culture inserts can be introduced in different ways. (A) A modified culture plate which allows medium to be pumped between 4 wells housing a scaffold insert. Additional equipment required includes a peristaltic pump and fresh and waste medium reservoirs. The inserts can be cultured in this system in the same way as with a standard 6-well plate. (B) A stirred bioreactor system for introducing fluid flow to scaffold inserts. This utilises a magnetic stirrer and uses a baffle to help direct the flow. A larger volume of medium is used to minimise the need for regular replenishment.
