Study name Efficacy of antiviral medications in controlling vertigo attacks of patients with Meniere's disease
Methods Parallel‐group randomised controlled trial with approximately 50 days of treatment and further 40 days of follow‐up
Participants Participants with Ménière's disease
  • Aged 18 to 85 years

  • With at least 2 episodes of vertigo per month, severely interfering with function and lasting for at least 20 minutes

  • Not on any medication for the preceding 3 months


Target sample size of 80 participants
Interventions Aciclovir 400 mg 5 times daily for 1 month, then 3 times daily for 10 days, then twice daily for 10 days, compared to placebo tablets
All participants will be encouraged to take a low‐salt diet
Outcomes Vertigo
Hearing loss
Aural fullness
Tinnitus
