The different regions (superficial zone, middle zone, deep zone, calcified cartilage, and subchondral bone) and the gradient of the unit are presented. These include collagen type II and X (Col), aggrecan (ACAN), cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP), and Sox9 for articular cartilage; and Col-I, osteocalcin (OCN), bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) for subchondral bone. The thickness of the bands on the right side represents the relative content of each component at the corresponding level.
