Each block consisted of two side-by-side pens of cattle of the same sex, source, and arrival date, that were randomly allocated one of the two pens, and pens were randomly assigned to treatment (PT or META); thus, each block represents a single treatment replication. Blocks 1 to 5 were in the Nebraska feedlot; blocks 6 to 8 were in the Kansas feedlot. Blocks 1, 3, and 6 were steers; blocks 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 were heifers.
