Mitophagy protects VSMC by eliminating damaged mitochondria. In VSMC, mitophagy is mainly aroused by PINK/Parkin, NIX/BNIP3 and AMPK/Sirt1 pathways and induces sequestration of damaged mitochondria by autophagosomes.
