Ageing alters skin structure, function and microbial colonisation. Intrinsic ageing and photoageing cause differential alterations to cutaneous architecture and physiology, resulting in marked shifts in microbial composition [86,106]. Indeed, this altered skin microbiome may be shaped by specific modifications in lipid composition [9], which could further contribute to age-related cutaneous pathology.
