^aLevels of recovery were calculated based on the sum of ³⁵S recovered as volatile compounds, dissolved nonvolatile compounds and filterable material (cells). A subset of the dissolved nonvolatile fraction was present as sulfate, and a subset of the filterable fraction was TCA-insoluble material; levels of recovery in these categories were also expressed as percentages of the [³⁵S]DMSP added. Compounds were added to 2-ml portions of DSS-3 cultures that had been grown to an absorbance at 540 nm of 0.2 in seawater medium containing 5 mM glucose.
