Covariates included: age, sex, race, Hispanic ethnicity, baseline BMI, maximum BMI in the prior year, baseline HbA1c, baseline blood pressure, days from most recent BMI measurement to baseline, days from most recent HbA1c measurement to baseline, number of in patient hospital days in the year prior to surgery, Charlson/Elixhauser comorbidity score, year of operation, smoking, and presence of codes for comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, NAFLD, GERD, anxiety, eating disorder, substance use, psychosis, kidney disease, infertility, polycystic ovaries, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism).
