Fig. 4. Intrahepatic infiltration of lymphocytes in HCVcc-infected chimpanzees. Hematoxylin/eosin-stained sections from liver biopsy samples taken 2 months postinfection display histopathological changes consistent with chronic viral hepatitis in both animals. (A) A lymphoid aggregate (arrowheads) can been seen at the periphery of the biopsy from chimpanzee 4x0483, with evidence of lobular lymphocytic infiltrates (arrows). (B) Lobular inflammation was also observed in animal 4x0495. Similar lymphoid-related changes were not observed in biopsies taken before infection with HCVcc (data not shown). (Scale bars, 25 mm.)
Fig. 5. HCV grown in vivo has a lower buoyant density than HCV grown in vitro. The relative viral RNA levels (open circles) and buoyant density (filled circles) were plotted for each fraction. Gradients were loaded with plasma from chimpanzee 4x0495 at 3 weeks postinfection (A), virus recovered from chimpanzee 4x0495 week-3 plasma then passaged in cell culture for 9 days (B), plasma from mouse D at 17 weeks postinfection (C), and virus recovered from mouse D week 17 plasma then passaged in cell culture for 5 days (D). Fraction 1 corresponds to the top of each gradient.
