Establishment and fate of latently infected cells. Infection of resting lymphocytes (closed circles) by virions (8-pointed star) results in preintegration latency (closed circles with virus). Encounter with antigen (4-pointed star) results in cell activation (spiked circle), leading to cell death (broken circle) or the establishment of latently infected resting lymphocyte with integrated provirus (closed circle with internal parallel segments). These latently infected cells remain until senescence or activation by antigen encounter or bystander cytokine stimulation.
