CD spectra [in 0.02 M phosphate buffer (pH 7), with ionic strength adjusted to 0.1 M with NaCl] of the synthesized oligonucleotide 22-mers containing cis and trans opened BaP DE-2 adducts at the indicated dG* residue. Spectra are normalized to 1.0 absorbance unit at 260 nm. Absolute configurations of the oligonucleotides containing cis opened adducts were assigned on the basis of the long wavelength (300-370 nm) pyrene bands (positive for 10R and negative for 10S adducted oligonucleotides). For the oligonucleotides containing trans opened adducts, in which these bands were weak, configurational assignments were confirmed by enzymatic hydrolysis to the known nucleoside adducts (see text).
