Carbon assimilation rates and stomatal conductance of leaves were measured on grafted trees with a portable computerized open-system IRGA (LI-6400; LI-COR, Lincoln, NE) under ambient temperature and relative humidity. A cool light source (6400-02 LED) under software control was used. Carbon assimilation rates were measured on three different plants for each transgenic or control line. Three young, fully expanded leaves were measured per plant. Stem water potential was measured with a pressure chamber at midday 4 days after irrigation. Each value is the mean of three replicates ±SE.
