Sequence alignment of the 39 functional genes of the human VH locus. The first part of the alignment corresponds to the exon 2 of the VH genes (325 nucleotides), and the second part includes the recombination signal sequences (39 nucleotides) and a portion of the 3' flanking sequence (103 nucleotides). The nucleotide positions in exon 2 are indicated just above the alignment. The zones highlighted in yellow show the regions excluded for the phylogenetic inferences. All sequences were taken from the complete sequence of the human VH locus [Matsuda, F., Ishii, K., Bourvagnet, P., Kuma, K.-I., Hayashida, H., Miyata, T. & Honjo, T. (1998) J. Exp. Med. 188, 2151-2162]. The human VH gene segments are classified into seven families (of which family 7 is not included in this alignment because no functional VH gene segment has been described for this family); the first number of each gene name refers to the family, the second number designates the ordinal position on chromosome 14 [Matsuda, F., Ishii, K., Bourvagnet, P., Kuma, K.-I., Hayashida, H., Miyata, T. & Honjo, T. (1998) J. Exp. Med. 188, 2151-2162].
