Transient biolisitic expression of DNA and RNA in adult schistosomes. (Lower) DNA biolistics. The schistosome spliced leader (SL) RNA promoter driving luciferase with a 3' untranslated region and polyadenylation signal was introduced into adult schistosomes at 1,800 or 2,000 psi. Worms were assayed for luciferase activity 40 hr after transfection. Bars represent the standard errors for SL RNA promoter (n = 6) and the no promoter construct (n = 3). (Upper) RNA biolistics. An m7G-capped, polyadenylated luciferase mRNA (see Fig. 4 of main paper) was introduced into adult schistosomes at »1,500 psi, and luciferase activity was measured 11 hr after transfection (n = 3; bar represents standard error). Background for these experiments represents light units present in the assay materials.
