Genomic DNA was amplified with the primers 5'-CGG GAT GTT GTG GTG TTC ACA-3' and 5'-CTT GCA TAG ATG TGT GTT TAA-3' to obtain part of class IIb1 domain sequences from the first nurse shark family. The conditions were 94ºC for 4 min, followed by 35 cycles of 94ºC for 1 min, 55ºC for 1 min, 72ºC for 1 min, and a final extension at 72ºC for 15 min, using pfu polymerase. The 214 base pair products were then cloned into pCR2.1 TA-cloning vector (Invitrogen) and sequenced. Gici-DAB*08 and 09 were previously reported as clone 8 (accession no. L20275) and clone 11 (accession no. L20274), respectively [Bartl, S. & Weissman, I. L. (1994) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 92, 262-266]. The paternal alleles identified in this study were DAB*03, sib 3; DAB*04, sib 4; DAB*05, sib 8; DAB*06, sib 15; DAB*07, sib 5.
