Supercomputer simulation of VF. A simulation of a 320 ´ 320 ´ 60 block of cells, where each cell is modeled by the Luo-Rudy Phase I ventricular cell model. The space step is 0.15 mm, so the tissue size is 48 mm ´ 48 mm ´ 9 mm. In this model, a single spiral wave (more accurately called a scroll wave in 3D) spontaneously breaks up into a state of chaotic wave conduction. Voltage is shown color-coded from red for highest voltage (depolarized tissue) to dark blue for lowest voltage (resting tissue). The epoch shown here is 1,500 ms.
