SI Materials and Methods

Mitochondrial Morphology in Living Cells.

Cells from primary cultures (3 ´ 105) were seeded into 36-mm dishes, and after 24 h, they were loaded for 30 min with 10 nM Mitotracker red. Images were captured with an inverted epifluorescence microscope with a ´63\/1.4 oil objective (Diaphot, Nikon, Japan) using Metamorph acquisition/analysis software (Universal Imaging Corp., Downingtown, PA).

IL-6 Secretion in Primary Cultures

. Cells were incubated for 6 h in starvation medium. IL-6 release in the medium was determined by ELISA analysis, according to the manufacturer's protocol (eBiosciences, San Diego, CA). Data, normalized on cells number, are means ±SD of three determinations (P < 0.005).
