Figure S1. An increased number of oocytes are TUNEL positive in the Sycp3-/- ovary. Apoptotic cells in the ovary were detected by TUNEL staining. (A) A few TUNEL-positive cells (brown staining) were present in the wild-type ovary at 2 dpp. (B) A larger number of TUNEL-positive cells were seen in the Sycp3-/- ovary at 2 dpp, predominantly localized in the cortex area (inset) of the mutant ovary. (C) The relative numbers of apoptotic cells in the wild-type and Sycp3-/- ovaries at E16.5 (n = 4) and E18.5 (n = 4) were the same. After birth, the relative number of apoptotic cells in the mutant ovary increased at 1 (n = 5) and 2 dpp (n = 5). No difference was detected at 4 (n = 5) and 8 dpp (n = 7) between wild-type and Sycp3-/- ovaries. Bars, 30 µm.
