(A) In vitro-translated [³⁵S]pre-atTic40 (IVT) imported into isolated A. thaliana or pea chloroplasts for the times indicated. The chloroplasts were treated with thermolysin, reisolated, and analyzed by SDS-PAGE and phosphorimaging. (B) The migration of an in vitro-translated (IVT) pre-atTic40 deletion mutant lacking its N-terminal 42 amino acids (lane 2) is coincident with int-atTic40 from a pre-atTic40 chloroplast import reaction (CP, lane 3) on SDS-PAGE.
