Figure S2. Conventional thin-section transmission electron micrograph of kinetochores in Xenopus extract spindles in metaphase. Kinetochore structure is typical of vertebrate kinetochores (Rieder, C.L. and E.D. Salmon. 1998. Trends Cell Biol. 8:310–318) with the plus ends of kinetochore microtubules (K-Mt) embedded in the kinetochore outer plate. Notice that several nonkinetochore microtubules (NonK-Mt) lie in close apposition to kinetochore fibers, extending alongside and past kinetochores in some cases.
