Figure S2. Proximal axons survive up to the site of optic nerve insult in D2.Bax−/− mice. Optic nerves were crushed as far behind the eye as possible and axon survival assessed 30–60 d later (Materials and methods). (A) In wild-type DBA/2J mice, axons (anti-neurofilament, green) are completely degenerated. (B) In contrast, in BAX-deficient eyes, proximal axons remained up to the crush site, but axons within and distal to the crush site degenerated. The proximal axons had clearly survived in the lamina and outside of the eye. At least six eyes of each genotype were analyzed. These findings are consistent with those 3.5 mo after intracranial optic nerve transection, in mice over expressing BCL2 (Cenni et al., 1996). V, vessels. Bars, 20 μm.
