In this issue, JCS is pleased to present a collection of articles that focus on collective cell migration. The migration of individual cells has been well characterised, but it has more recently been shown that cells can also migrate as a group in several physiological contexts, such as during development and wound repair. Importantly, collective cell migration can also occur when tumour cells invade surrounding tissues during metastasis. The articles in this Minifocus (two of which are accompanied by full-colour posters) showcase key recent findings on the nature of collective cell migration, and highlight the diversity of biological settings in which it is important.
