Attitudes to the use of health care for illness in the family

1. What would you do if a close relative, a child, in your house at the weekend developed acute tonsillitis? Would you call out a general practitioner, go to a cooperative group practice out of hours clinic, prescribe an antibiotic, go to a hospital accident and emergency department, or persuade them to wait until Monday then go to a general practitioner?

2. What do you do if a close relative was extremely anxious (heart palpitations, trembling, nausea) about a forthcoming interview or examination and asked for help? Would you prescribe an anxiolytic for him/her, persuade them to go to a general practitioner, or persuade them to be patient and stick it out?

3. What would you do if your spouse or a close relative was unable to sleep following a burglary at home? Would you prescribe an hypnotic for the person, persuade them to go to a general practitioner, or persuade them to be patient and stick it out?
