. Peripheral blood expression profiles of 196 genes identified by DD as candidate tumor cell markers. Profiles of all 196 genes in 48 blood samples. Healthy volunteers included 15 women with no history of breast disease; patients included 26 women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or invasive breast cancer. Patients treated with chemotherapy before blood donation are indicated. Gene expression levels are color-coded according to key at bottom. Because expression levels for each gene were normalized to the mean of all blood samples for that gene, nondifferential (black) values represent the average gene expression level. Red represents overexpressed, and blue represents underexpressed genes. Expression was analyzed by cluster analysis (1) in the gene dimension only, and the resulting hierarchical tree is shown at the left. The magenta region of the tree is cluster I, which includes 12 genes overexpressed specifically in the blood of breast cancer patients. For a full cluster diagram with all gene identities, see Fig. 5.
