After normalization, the coefficient of variation (CV) for each EST array element (7,295 total) was plotted against the mean intensity for the gene (GEI). The average is graphed for three different mRNA probes, 3 h K⁺-withdrawn, 3 h control, and 6 h control. The average CV above an intensity of 30 to 40 was below 0.2 for all probes. Inset illustrates a tight scatter when replicate hybridizations are compared. Each point represents a different gene graphed on a log-log axis comparing the intensity measured on one replicate versus the other.
