Ribonuclease S7 susceptibility of virion-associated RNAs. Before RNA extraction, PR^- virions and MuLV VLPs produced by the SFV system, and, as a control, 2 µg of naked tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) RNA (Roche), were treated with (lanes 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 9) or without (lanes 1, 4, and 7) ribonuclease S7, and in the presence (lanes 3, 5, and 9) or absence of 0.1% Triton X-100. RNAs extracted from these samples were then analyzed as in Fig. 2. MuLV genomic RNA, small cellular RNAs, the SFV genomic and subgenomic RNAs, and the TMV RNA are indicated by arrows. Lanes 1-3 are PR^- virions; lanes 4-6 are Gag-VLPs produced by the SFV system; and lanes 7-9 are TMV RNA.
