X-ray survival (averages ± SE) of pregerminated conidia of bimD6 compared to the bimD+ control (FGSC no. A830). The X-ray dose rate was 12.2 R/sec (=43.8 kR/hr, with a setting of 145 kV and 5 mA). Conidia were plated at a range of dilutions and plates preincubated for 5 hours at 30°C; some were held unirradiated at room temperature for determination of baseline survival, whereas others were placed on ice, close to the radiation source, for increasing periods, as indicated. Incubation of plates, after all treatment was completed, was for 3 days at 30°C before colonies were counted and survival calculated.
