    Consumption of ethanol, production of succinate, and lack of acetate accumulation in cocultures of G. metallireducens and a G. sulfurreducens strain deficient in both formate dehydrogenase and hydrogenase activities (Fig. SM1) and inability of G. sulfurreducens and P. carbinolicus to grow alone on a medium provided with the substrates for the cocultures, ethanol as the electron donor and fumarate as the electron acceptor (Fig. SM2).
