Staining is not necessary for the labeling of receptors on cells. Here the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is detected by immunolabeling with monoclonal anti-EGFR antibody and 20-nm gold colloids and silver enhanced on fixed A431 cells in water. Shown are successive enlargements of the cell, with the rectangle depicting the area that is enlarged in the next panel (arrow). The nucleus of the cell is evident as a bright patch at the bottom of A. Single gold nanoparticles attached to EGFR are easy to discern.
