*ars activity is the number of transformants obtained with a plasmid containing the intergene, expressed as a percentage of the number of transformants obtained with an identical amount of the control plasmid pRC20 containing ars1 (100%). The activities of intergenes 4 and 6, while low, were 10 and 12 times the background activity, respectively.
