(a) Diluting wild-type csgA+ cells with nonsignaling csgA mutants increases the ripple wavelength, l , inversely with the fraction of wild-type cells, ƒ [data from Sager, B. & Kaiser, D. (1994) Genes Dev. 8, 2793–2804]. The model fits these data if we include a linear dependence of the phase velocity on cell density. (b) Simulation identical to Fig. 3a, including the linear dependence on cell density. The results are nearly indistinguishable. Therefore, we could have used w = w0+ w×n + wn(n±) in place of Eq. 5 without altering our conclusions.
