α7nAChR mRNA expression is upregulated in the tissue of patients with periodontal disease. RNA was isolated from tissue samples from healthy patients and those with periodontal disease and analysed for α7nAChR mRNA expression by real-time PCR. α7nAChR mRNA expression was normalised against a housekeeping gene, RNA Polymerase II. The data presented represent the mean with 95 % confidence intervals of the normalised α7nAChR mRNA expression for the two cohorts calculated by the 2−ΔCT method. Statistical analysis involved Levene’s test of homoscedasticity on the natural log-transformed 2−ΔCT values followed by an independent t test to compare two means (*P < 0.05)
