Schematic of the dynamic clamp experimental setup. Voltage of a cell is monitored, typically with a patch pipette, and a feedback current is calculated in real time with a computer or analog circuitry according to a predetermined model. This model may describe a voltage- or ligand-gated ion channel, or some other process. The feedback current is then applied to the cell with the same, or a second patch pipette (see Technical challenges).
