The early intrinsic events in the initiation of signaling are affinity dependent. The BCR transitions reversibly between free, antigen bound and oligomerized states (from left to right). These states are highly sensitive to the affinity of the BCR for antigen. High affinity BCRs are readily driven to oligomers whereas low affinity receptors only inefficiently oligomerize.
