Experiment 1: Making attribute judgments about the self (warm colors) relative to a well-known but personally unfamiliar other (former U.S. president George W. Bush) (cool colors) shows increased BOLD response (an indirect measure of activity) across a widespread network that prominently includes rostral ACC (rACC) and anterior MPFC (aMPFC) in the frontal midline, and the mid-cingulate cortex. Regions in rACC and aMPFC modulating in this contrast were used in unbiased region of interest analyses in Experiments 2 to 4. Maps are thresholded at p < 0.001, uncorrected.
