a

Pre-diabetes was defined as having a fasting plasma glucose ≥ 5.6 mmol/L (100 mg/dL) but < 7.0 mmol/L (126 mg/dL) or 2-h values in the oral glucose tolerance test of ≥ 7.8 (140 mg/dL) but < 11.1 mmol/L (200 mg/dL).

b

Significantly different from the normal-glucose group, P ≤ 0.05 (Fisher's exact test)

c

Significantly different from the normal-glucose group, P ≤ 0.05 (independent samples t-test).

d

Significantly different from the normal-glucose group, P ≤ 0.05 (Mann-Whitney U-test).

e

Tests of significance between groups were based on the Mann-Whitney U-test
