Extracellular iodide suppresses breast cancer cell proliferation in dependence of SLC5A5 sodium-iodide symporter expression. a Whole cell currents were recorded in MCF-7 breast cancer cells and normalized to cell capacitance (in pF). The histogram shows the mean number of viable MCF-7 cells counted on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th day after cell seeding. Cells were planted at a density of 1.5 × 105 ml−1 with the medium containing 10 % FBS. The cells were then treated with medium vehicle (control), 1 μM tRA, 1 mM NaI or 1 μM tRA and 1 mM NaI combined (n = 4 independent experiments). Error bars indicate SEM. Star indicates P < 0.002
