(A) Developmental and constitutive degradation by autophagy, canonical endolysosomal degradation and neuron-specific endolysosomal degradation (Neuronal Sort and Degrade; NSD). Plasma membrane (PM) proteins such as guidance receptors are degraded through NSD (Williamson et al., 2010b). It has not been shown what membrane proteins are degraded through autophagy and canonical endolysosomal degradation in a developing neuron. (B) Mechanisms of activity-dependent cargo-sorting and degradation in pre- and postsynaptic terminals through endolysosomal degradation or autophagy.
