Introducing Therapeutic Advances in Rare Disease

Samantha Taylor 1,
PMCID: PMC10032439  PMID: 37180498

I am pleased to announce the launch of the first volume of Therapeutic Advances in Rare Disease. A peer-reviewed, gold open-access journal that focuses on the highest-quality research, reviews and scholarly comment on pioneering efforts and innovative studies across all rare diseases. I am delighted to work on this exciting new title with a team of world-renowned Associate Editors and a highly regarded international Editorial Board, who bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to guarantee the highest standards of publication.

The aim of Therapeutic Advances in Rare Disease will be to publish high-quality editorials, reviews and original research articles relating to the innovative development of treatments for rare disease patients. Key elements of the journal include a rapid but rigorous peer review and open-access publication process. As rare disease research continues to evolve, with many therapeutics showing promise and on their way through clinical development, we believe that the launch of this title is timely and will provide an important vehicle through which to disseminate the latest opinion and evidence to a broad audience.

This journal aims to be the choice for prompt publication of results from well-designed clinical studies. In this context, we want to encourage the reporting of preliminary data as well as negative clinical studies. We will also publish observational studies and basic research with clinical relevance. If this is of interest to you, we welcome submission of manuscripts to our new journal, at mc.manuscriptcentral.com/taird. For those of you who submit articles to our journal, we will work to ensure quick turnaround of manuscripts so that the information is current and relevant to clinical practice. These features will allow us to become a well-respected addition to publishing in rare disease, and further enhance the dissemination of opinion and research.

Invited articles include editorials (analysis of evidence and clinical opinions), reviews (systematic, guidance, focused) and perspective reviews. In addition, we welcome Letters to the Editors, which can relate to a particular viewpoint, or to discuss any unique case or case series, backed up with a current literature search on the topic.

The journal is committed to supporting open science initiatives and strengthening the patient voice in academic journals. Working with patient experts and patient groups to further validate research and publishing plain language summaries alongside articles to help increase the understanding of papers for non-specialists.

Therapeutic Advances in Rare Disease will be the 17th title in SAGE’s successful Therapeutic Advances series, following titles in Cardiovascular Disease, Respiratory Disease, Neurological Disorders, Gastroenterology, Medical Oncology, Urology, Musculoskeletal Disease, Drug Safety, Chronic Disease, Hematology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Psychopharmacology, Ophthalmology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Infectious Disease and Vaccines and Immunotherapy.

Please join us in making this journal a timely and successful addition to the literature on rare disease research. I will work with the Editors to ensure that manuscript submission and peer review function smoothly and efficiently and will be pleased to discuss the suitability of your manuscript for the journal or answer any questions you may have.

We look forward to reading your contributions, and to establishing Therapeutic Advances in Rare Disease as a leading journal in its field.
