It was with extreme sadness that the Canadian Urological Association received the news of the sudden passing of Dr. Anil Kapoor on Tuesday, February 28, 2023.
Anil was a truly valuable member of our community and was very much respected by so many across our country and beyond. Throughout his career, he touched the lives of countless patients, colleagues, and trainees. His clinical, research, and educational contributions in the field of urologic oncology, and particularly kidney cancer, have been numerous and exceptional.
Moreover, he was an invaluable leader and volunteer in Canadian urology, serving in many roles on the CUA Board of Directors and Committees over the past 16 years (see inset). Most notably, he chaired the all-important CUA Guidelines Committee from 2015–2019, served on the Editorial Board of the Canadian Urological Association Journal from its inception in 2007 (most recently as an Associate Editor), and was, as the time of his passing, the Scientific Director of our most valued CUA Scholarship Foundation. Through his strong leadership of our scholarship programs, which included him launching the CUASF Mentorship Program, Anil improved the academic careers of so many young and talented clinician scientists over the past several years.
Finally, he played a critical role in the public awareness and patient support of those suffering from kidney cancer through his tireless involvement in Kidney Cancer Canada.
In addition to his remarkable professional accomplishments and his dedication to improving the lives of patients with urologic disease and kidney cancer, our community will miss his gregarious and upbeat personality, as well as his wonderful sense of humour.
Anil’s legacy will certainly live on through the countless patients he helped, as well as the colleagues he mentored and inspired. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
