After a year's hiatus in 1999, the Texas Heart® Institute has again granted an Award for Undergraduate Writing in the History of Cardiovascular Medicine and Surgery. The purpose of the award is to stimulate interest in medical history among medical students, and the winner receives an honorarium, a plaque, and publication of his or her paper in the Texas Heart Institute Journal. Every paper is considered for publication, regardless of whether it wins.
The winner of the 2000 award is Misty M. Payne, who has completed her 3rd year of medical school at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. Ms Payne grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska, until her family moved to Oregon, where she completed high school in Eugene. Her undergraduate major at the University of Portland was Life Science, and her minor was Spanish. At present, Ms Payne is doing a student fellowship in pathology; she expects to graduate in June 2002. Her outside interests include flying, hiking, and horseback riding. Notably, she is a member of the Harley Owners' Group (HOG).
