Editor's Note on ‘Glucocorticoid-induced leucine zipper (GILZ)/NF-κB interaction: role of GILZ homo-dimerization and C-terminal domain’

The Editors were alerted in the second quarter of 2022 that some blots depicted in Figure 2B show unusual levels of similarity:

  • The LZ2 10% INPUT and LZ6 GST-GILZ panels may be identical.

  • The GLIZ and LZ1 panels may be identical.

An expression of concern was published in November 2022.

The experiments were conducted 18 years ago, and the corresponding author no longer has the original data. The institution investigated and were unable to express an objective opinion on the authenticity of the figure.

The Editors have scrutinised the figure and have reached the following conclusions.

  • The LZ2 10% INPUT and LZ6 GST-GILZ panels are not identical.

  • The GLIZ and LZ1 panels are most likely identical as demonstrated below.

Figure 2B, GLIZ and LZ1 panels. From top to bottom: original panels; negative and curve adjustments; equalize adjustment; levels adjustments; gradient map adjustments.

The background of the two panels is very similar. The shape and intensities of the bands are also very similar.

While these issues may not affect the results or conclusion of the study, in the absence of original data, the Editors advise readers to examine the figure with care. The corresponding author disagrees with this decision.
