Prof. M. Vanathi is an accomplished Ophthalmologist with an impressive academic and professional background. Her journey began as an Indian National Talent Search Scholar and a Tamil Nadu state rank holder in Higher Secondary School, setting the stage for her future success. She graduated from Madras Medical College, Chennai, and pursued her Ophthalmology residency at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

Vanathi further honed her skills by completing a Senior Residency in Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery at AIIMS, New Delhi, and an international clinical fellowship in advanced lamellar transplants from the Singapore National Eye Centre. Since 2005, she has served as a clinical faculty member at AIIMS, New Delhi, and currently holds the position of Professor of Ophthalmology. Her expertise lies in the fields of cornea, cataract, refractive surgery, eye banking, contact lenses, and corneal transplants.

Throughout her career, Vanathi has been actively involved in numerous national and international academic societies, including her membership in the Cornea Society since 2007. Her contributions to the field of Ophthalmology are well recognized, with over 130 international indexed publications and over 150 international and national non-indexed publications to her name. She has authored several landmark articles, including the renowned “Crater and Chop” Technique in hard cataract surgery, as well as major review articles on topics such as Paediatric Keratoplasty, Corneal Graft Rejection, and Refractory Keratitis, published in the Survey of Ophthalmology and the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology (IJO).

Prof. M. Vanathi’s surgical skills, commitment to academia, and teaching prowess have earned her accolades and the opportunity to mentor over 50 postgraduate and Ph.D. theses. Her impartial stance, integrity, attention to detail, inclusive attitude, and exceptional surgical competence have garnered praise from peers and students alike. In addition to her teaching and research endeavours at AIIMS, she has held esteemed positions as the Managing Editor of Kerasight (Bulletin of ISCKRS), RPC Times, and Editor of the Delhi Journal of Ophthalmology (DJO). Her tenure as the Editor of DJO and Honorary Secretary of the Delhi Ophthalmological Society (DOS) are widely recognized as significant academic milestones for the Delhi Ophthalmological Society.

Vanathi’s expertise extends beyond her clinical and academic pursuits. She has served on the editorial boards of several journals, acted as a Guest Editor for the Open Journal of Ophthalmology, and contributed to over 50 chapters in national and international Ophthalmic books. Her notable co-editorship of the widely acclaimed textbook “Postgraduate Ophthalmology” further underscores her significant contributions to the field.

Recognized for her outstanding achievements, Prof. M. Vanathi has received several prestigious awards, including the AIIMS Research Excellence Award in 2019, the Best of IJO Award in 2021, and the IJO Silver Award in 2022. Her administrative experience, research writing prowess, and editing skills position her as an asset in advancing the IJO to greater heights in the years to come.
